Endodontic therapy, more commonly known as a root canal, is a treatment process used to restore a tooth that has had the internal structures compromised or damaged. Your teeth have multiple layers. The outermost layer of tooth enamel is basically a sheath of densely packed microscopic mineral crystals. Damage or decay in this layer of a tooth, can usually be repaired with a filling or all the tooth enamel can be restored with a crown.
If damage or decay extends beyond the enamel layer to compromise the dentin, pulp or root of a tooth, the resulting complications can require more extensive treatment options. In a severe case, the tooth might be so compromised that one of Root Canal Specialists, PC’s dentist, simply must extract the tooth.
However, if the damage to the internal structures of the tooth are modest, then we can usually perform endodontic therapy. This involves using a drill to remove the tooth enamel to gain full access to the interior of the tooth.
Any compromised structures are extracted. Then we use a firm yet rubbery material called gutta percha to replace them. This creates a post-like structure known as an abutment.
We then take a detailed impression of the abutment and all other corresponding teeth. This is sent to a dental lab where a crown is prepared.
Once completed we can cement the crown on top of the abutment and the tooth’s function and presence in your mouth will be fully restored.
